Hi, my timing belt recently broke and I am going to change it myself. The guys at Kragen said that I should replace the water pump when i'm in there. Is this necessary?

Also I keep reading that my valves will not have been damaged, but I see in the Chilton manual as well as the parts database at Kragen that it is an interference engine. I did try to crank the engine over after th belt broke, will my engine be ok?

I have an 87 240 DL.

The B230F is a non-interference engine.

I would not change the water pump unless it was leaking or noisy.

Its not necessary to replace the pump, but you might consider changing the tensioner and seals if they are leaking.

if pump is old, now is a good time, as you'll have the same work to do again just to get at it. It's cheap insurance IMO. Mine looks old, not leaking, but I'm replacing it now with my new radiator so I prevent later troubles. I live in a climbate of extremes-from very hot (>40deg C for at least 3 consecutive weeks) to nearly freezing for 6 weeks. it's not wise to wait until it starts leaking to replace it, as the consequences of lost coolant are significant if you're not one to watch your gauges. (Most of us don't.) My thermostat was reasonably ok, but my housing was not the best, so I'm slowly doing the job. new radiator hoses are a wise fitting. I'll also replace the front main seal and the cam seals which are leaking at this time, and the aircon pump & rubber mounts which are all dead. A new dryer will be mandatory as I'm changing gases. Soon, I'll have the transmission out and I'll fit a ear main seal & a reconned T50 man 5 speed Toyota box. It should handle all the power and torque I use, and get me better mileage. I'll prob use a manual bellhousing from a B20, or B23, and adapt it, as that will be cheaper than buying a new custom housing (~$500-) and shipping it here (3,000mi, $200-). a manual B230 housing/M47 is just too rare & $$ to get from a wrecker, and they're prob. cactus anyway. I'll replace cam belt and tensioner as needed-they are overdue, unless they've been done recently. I was encouraged by the good thermostat.

My Gates brochure indicates that these are interference motors.

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure...ocation_id=3487

I wouldn't change the water pump unless it's leaking or noisy... It's just too damn easy to do. You don't have to pull the timing belt when you do the water pump.

If you broke the timing belt, there's a good chance you didn't ruin the motor, but the only way to be sure is to put a new timing belt on and try it.

Many different engine/cam profiles existed any given year, all around the world. A B230F which Volvo calls the "USA version" is a non-interference engine.
