My "bulb out" dashbord indicator came on and after checking all lights I could not find a burnt out bulb. I took the car to the local dealer and they told me the "bulb failure relay" was bad and needed replacing. I decided to try and replace it myself but so far I'm not doing to good.

I found this picture on another website and also read that the realy is permantly mounted to the relay board. Also, when I looked at pictures of the replacement relay they lok nothing like the original.

So now I'm wondering how the heck do you take the old relay out and get the new one in that doesn't at all look like the original?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I thought there were two bulb failure sensors, they are not relays either.

One controls the front end the other the rear, the rear is under the carpeting in the trunk for a sedan, a wagon I am sure it is back there somewhere. Have no idea where the front one is located. most likely in the dash.

But before you replace them, make sure it is not a bad bulb. The sensor works on measuring electrical resistance between the left and right sides of the car, it detects a lower or higher reading it assumes that a bulb went out. But that might not always be the case, corrosion in a bulb socket could mislead a sensor, but the bulb still will illuminate.

You will need to remove bulbs in pairs to trouble shoot. A bad sensor is not unheard of, but bulb socket corrosion is more prominent.

Thanks for the reply and after relooking at the picture I posted you are right that it is called a sensor and not a relay although it is attached to the relay board.

I checked all the bulbs last night and they appear to be burning equally bright on both sides for each set.

Anybody have an idea how to remove and replace the sensor? Sensor "F" in the picture in my OP.

Thanks

Burning equally is not the way to diagnose the situation.

DanR - I am not trying to diagnose the problem, the dealer has already done that. My question in my post was "Anybody have an idea how to remove and replace the sensor? Sensor "F" in the picture in my OP."

Those relays are behind the ashtray, you'll need to pull the frame from around the radio, that contains the little storage compartment below the radio. I don't know that that particular relay is for the bulb out indicator, mine is a big red and round. But found in the same area. When that relay went out for me, I had no brakelights period, and the failure light was not on.

There is a cover over the lighter socket that can be removed using your fingers. I normally grab the right hand side of the cover (finger in the socket, thumb on the right hand edge) and gently pull. There should be 2 screws on the left hand side under the cover. Once removed, the tray comes out left hand side first. Prise back the 2 White plastic clips on the relay tray and it will pull out

I usually remove the "kickplate" under the dashboard on the passengers side. This give full access to all of the relays, and is easy to do.
This is the way to do with all Volvo's 960,just look in "vadis".

I have the same problem with my 940. I dont have any power going to the stop lights but the switch works. Can you bypass this light fail sensor by connecting the yellow/red wire to the yellow wire?
