hi, new to the forum and i might be a owner of a 97 volvo 850 but have a few questions.
doing some research, all i can find is info on the 5 cylinder straight 5. this has the straight 6 with rear wheel drive rather than the front wheel drive. does anyone have any info on this? besides the engine is there any other differences?
beside the usual, does this make have anything i should look at in particular for trouble?

The 960 was RWD and had the I6. To my knowledge the 850 never had a 6 cyl. engine.

By the model name, the 5 in the 850 refers to the cylinders.
And there were no 860s produced.

there are no inline 6 cylinder 850's.

940's (4 cyl) and 960's (6 cyl) sorta look like the 850, but these are bigger and both were built many of the same production years as the 850's.... :unsure: :blush-anim-cl:

I'm glad you wrote that you 'might' be an owner of an 850 - because you most certainly aint.

(In Volvo speak 8 means Series number, 5 stands for the number of cylinders and 0 simply for - there aint no more - however, just to inject a little more confusion, in some countries the sedan is known as the 854 (last digit stands for no. of doors) so therefore, the wagon is logically an 855)

So, if your vehicle vehicle is fitted with a 6 cylinder engine and rear drive, then you obviously have one of the models that did have an in-line 6 cylinder engine and rear wheel drive such as the 260, 760, or 960 and, in my experience, there is usually a faily obvious clue attached to the rear of the vehicle i.e. a silver emblem such as 260, 760, 960 etc.

So I would suggest you take a peek at the rear of your vehicle, and it shouldn't take you too long to figure out which model you own.
