With the Engine too rich error code...what is the first thing I should check?

I cleared the codes to see if it pops back on tomorrow.

On the O2 sensor:
I am not sure, but you probably just have one, instead of two. Pre-cat.

Take the sensor out and clean the tip with petrol. You can dip the head a few times, and shake it a bit.

No need to replace it for now. See if that makes any change.

Additionally, you may also want to check the general condition of the engine, and look at the hoses etc...

I'm not familiar with OBD2 codes, but wouldn't there be a seperate code for a bad O2 sensor, rather than just a generic "running rich" code?

Now that you mention it, yes, an usually, a few other codes are triggered to 'confirm' a malfunctioning unit. Though it doesnt happen all the time.

For instance, a misfiring cyclinder, would see like a few codes being triggered at once. But of course, not always.

Good one. We (at least I) tend to overlook the obvious sometimes.

I always tend to look for the simple answer - I start out as if the car was a pre engine management and look for the easy to fix problems / solutions first. I just wish that garages took the same approach, nowadays they plug the car in and do what the computer says.
you have a flapping noise from the front left corner and the car is pulling to that side sir, we will replace the suspension unit and steering gear, Oh and while we were doing all that we pumped up that tyre that was looking a bit flat!

I just ordered a new air filter...it doesn't look too clogged or dirty...but I figure that would be the best first thing to try.

Well I would, but theres some people I see driving round out there with great bug bulges at the side on an obvious half flat tyre, without seeming to notice.
