Just purchased 88' 240 wagon a month ago. Previous owner said that it needed a new motor blower as it did not work when you turned on the switch. However, today I drove the car to the store and heard a noise and low and behold the blower was working. I must have left the switch turned on. The switch was set on 4. It was blowing a small amount of air out. Not what I would consider the correct amount for the high setting. I went inside the store and came back to discover that once I started the car the blower would not work again. I've left the switch on hoping that it would start again but it hasn't. Anyone have any ideas? Is this electrical or is it the actual motor going out? I've read about what is involved with replacing the motor and I'm not looking forward to the task. Guess I'm hoping for a simpler solution like a bad wire or relay. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Great forum for first time volvo owners!

Welcome to the burned out blower motor club. If you successfully replace the motor yourself, you will be elevated to a position of honor.

Mine went south and I had it replaced by the pros.

There is an 87.4% chance the motor needs to be replaced.

There are two basic methods -- the Yard Sale Method and the Chain Saw Method. In the Yard Sale Method you start removing parts, driver's seat first, until you fill up your driveway. It seems to be the preferred way.

It is a do able job, but a little intense. You virtualy have to remove most of the dash to get to the motor. One of the toughest things is removing the clips that hold on the plastic molding. Be careful not to loose them, mark all wiring to make it easier when putting back together. I would also suggest replacing the switch and reostat as well as the blower motor. It is a good all day job and possibly a day and a half. Good Luck, the joy of having the ac work again is fantastic. Especially as you pass other 240's with the windows down on a hot day lol.

Good Luck
