Hey guys, I have been getting in to fixing up my car... its been my first so it's been rough. I just kinda maintain it is all.

Anyways, I'm trying to change the AC belt on my 240 DL and its been hard as HELL. I cant get the damn thing on and I dont know what bolts to loosen and what to keep tighten, etc.

The engine has a fixed bolt and a pully/sliding bolt system. I loosened up the fixed bolt for the AC part, and I tried loosening the fixed bolt on the power steering and I still get ZERO movement on that entire unit. What the heck can I do to fix this? Ive tried using a wrench to press the unit over to the left, but it just moves the entire thing (all flywheels, not just the 2 on the right) so its pointless. Im so lost and there's nothing on the internet to help.

I've been driving around with no AC and no power steering for 4 days and I'm starting ot get kinda frustrated. Im too stubborn to take it to a shop.

Thanks for any help.

There is a long skinny 10mm adjusting bolt. That's the one that does the belt tightening/loosening. Clockwise to move the accessory outboard and tighten the belt. That's how it works with all three accessories -- alt, P/S, and A/C.

But before that you need to loosen a set bolt that keeps the adjusting bolt fixed. The set bolt is on the adjusting bolt bracket.

But first you need to loosen the mounting bolts that are on the curved brackets, and the A/C compressor has two of them. One in front that you can see and one in back that you can't see.

Put the front of the car on ramps, or use jack stands, remove the belly pan. Get your nose up there at the back of the compressor with a flashlight. It's not the inboard bolt nearest the engine block, it's the one in the middle of everything.

Sorry, no pic. My belly pan is aluminum and a bit of a pain to get in and out.

Post back.

If all else fails, you can loosen the 2 lower mounting bolts and take the compressor off its mounts to get the belt back on. Now would also be a good time to replace the rubber accessory mounts holding the compressor and the power steering pump in place. These are probably worn and will make the belts run out of line. Good news is that they are cheap.
