Greetings,

It's been awhile since I wandered around these forums but I recently ran into a problem with my Vovlo 850, it seems that it happens much more frequent when it has recently rained or is wet out, or the car is getting wet. The car will sometimes have trouble starting up.(takes a few seconds longer to start)

The other problem is (and this has happened to me a few times) I would stop at a stop sign and idle for a few seconds, or maybe more, seems like the longer I am idleled the more likely it is to happen, I step on the pedal and the car seems to struggle to get going, it will hiccup it acts like it's going to start moving but it chokes and hesitates and sometimes it even dies, and I turn the key and it starts up fine and I can keep on rolling. But I am concerned at what's going on and I'd like to get it fixed, I brought it to my local garage (a VERY good mechanic, real honest guy, doesn't charge for something he can't fix) and he couldn't figure it out, so I was wondering if anyone here could offer some help?

The car has died on me at least 3 or 4 times and the it usually happens after idleing if I can keep the engine going, maybe putting it in park at a stop sign and revving it a little can keep it going, feels like if I keep my foot on the pedal it won't happen, again it doesn't ALWAYS happen but it's enough to concern me.

Appreciate the help,
youngvolvoowner

welcome back. try changing your fuel filter, and or fuel relay. it sounds like the relay, but the filter is usually neglected so give that a go also. oh wait, you said only when it is wet, try having the maf sensor cleaned

yup. the MAF. also while under the hood check your cap & rotor. a worn/fouled cap & rotor will run sorta hinkey when the humidity is high, sometimes that is...

most advance/pep shop type stores have CNC MAF cleaner these days.

good luck

There indeed was some error codes registered on the diagnostics box, they are as as follows:

A1 - Transmittion

3-1-3 - Faulty signal from gear position sensor (PNP)

A2 - Fuel System/Engine

A3 - ABS

1-4-4 - Brake discs overheated

2-1-3 - Left rear wheel sensor, no signal on moving off

A6 - Ignition

1-5-4 - EGR system flow too high in system

2-4-1 - EGR system flow too low in system

VERY strange how I get both too high and too low codes....

A7- Combined Instruments (Trip Computer)

1-2-2 - Temp. sensor interval too long

That's about it, I don't know how to check the MAF sensor, or clean it, I don't really know where it is, I don't know when the laste tuneup was done, I had bought it in the winter of 2006 and hadn't had it tuned up since, so I have no idea when the previous owner did it, but I'm beginning to tihnk I need a tuneup, air filter definatly needs replacement. Rotor and rotor cap looked fine on first glance, no cracks or anything that I could visibly see.

Anyone got an idea what's with the error codes? Any of them look serious? Anyone have any suggestions for futher treating this car for it's dying after idle problem?

I really appreciate all your help,
