I've been driving my pre-owned 2006 S60 2.5T AWD for around 7 weeks now, started out at 46,000km when purchased, just brought it up to 50k. Still on original warranty.

I've been having a really annoying problem with the car, and am getting completely fed up with the dealer's service department not actually fixing the problem after several attempts, and not sure what to do at this point.

I'm experiencing a constant squeaking sound that appears to be coming from the rear driver side wheel. It happens between 40 and 60 kmh when I am coasting (foot off the pedal). The mechanics hear it as well when we go out for a road test.

First time, I'm told it's from a rusty ridge on the front discs, which were also grinding when first starting to drive in the morning (which would make sense) - front discs replaced, pads resurfaced. (Rad fan was also changed at this point, as I noted it was quite loud...and the fan rpm would jump up when starting the car, and then back down...turns out this is normal on the S60 fan.)

Come back from vacation a week later, bring it in for the persistent squeaking, they tell me there was rust on the ridge of the rear disc, which was rubbing the pads, causing the squeak. Shaved down the discs and resurfaced the pads. Go to pick up the they car, they tell me road test was fine, no more noise. I drive off the lot, and almost immediately notice the squeak is still present.

Drive back, same mechanic does another road test, hears the squeak, apologizes and tells me that he didn't hear it after the repairs. He feels that there is still some rust left, but due to remaining material on the pads/discs, he can't shave down any more. Suggests full replacement of rear discs/pads, servicing hand brake shoes as well, dealer agrees to cover it. Does road test, tells me its fine now, but once again, as soon as I drive off, new back brakes, but same squeaking.

Bring it back in last week....this time they get the service foreman to take a look. Do roadtest together, he hears the squeak, and has a different idea - seems there was a possible issue with the rear propeller shaft flange (on awd models) rubbing against the exhaust, or a rear diff issue. Tells me that since mechanic #1 was new, he wouldn't have known of this 2 year old technical bulletin. Tells me he will personally work on the car to make sure it's dealt with properly.

They kept car for 2 days. Turns out it was the retaining clips on the hand brake shoes that were loose, as when driven with hand brake engaged 1 or 2 notches, squeak disappeared. Replaced the clips, replaced the wheel hub as they had damaged the splines with all the on/off they were doing. Wasn't coming from the propeller shaft. Tells me he did 3 road tests, and squeaking is completely gone - but may return in a few months due to the nature of the handbrake system (rust, moisture).

Now get this - as soon as I drive off the lot, the squeak is still there! Call them, but since everybody was cutting out early for the long weekend, I'll have to wait till next Tuesday.

Is this normal with Volvo that I should have to go back these many times for the same problem? And each time being told "it's gone...we did several road tests and can't hear a thing!" Yes, they are very nice & polite, but I'm really getting thin on patience with them. And while they tell me it doesn't affect safety, it is a really annoying squeak that I don't want. And I was sold the car with a "Volvo Certified Pre-Owned" sticker. So much for the term "certified".

I know people with an older V70, and S80....and they don't have this issue. I don't want it either...maybe a Kia or Hyundai will be more susceptible to being squeaky, but I really don't think a car of this caliber should do this. I've never had this in any of my other cars. I'm getting the impression that they are not willing to do the proper repair for some reason - and by telling me it may come back but wont' affect safety, that they are just trying to pass the buck?

Any ideas on how to proceed from here? This dealership is a convenient 5 minutes from home, the next one over is 45+ minutes away...and owned by the same people. Do I go back to the same dealer and speak to the GM, or call Volvo directly? One thing is for sure....I'm not buying their "we roadtested and dont' hear it anymore" - I'll make sure to have the mechanic in the car with me before accepting the car back.

Sorry for the long rant...just feeling really frustrated over this...thought I was buying good quality reputation, and now I'm having 2nd thoughts...appreciate any input.
