I have a 2001 S60 that recently started whistling (sounds like a space ship or something). It is intermittent and is extremely loud. When whistling the car runs rough and dies in traffic. The noise doesn't change tone or tempo when you accelerate.

I took it to the dealer and they said there is an air box below the intake that is cracked and needs to be replaced, however they want $880 to do the work. I looked under the intake box and can't seem to find anything that is out of the ordinary. I'm afraid that the whistling is coming from a simple hose or something and they are trying to take me to the cleaners because I can't diagnose it to tell them different. Anyways... Has anyone else had a problem like this? Do you have any suggestions, other than shell out the $880 and stop complaining? :)

Don't ever take it to the dealership for repairs. You can probably get the same service done at 1/2 the price at a private mechanic.

I had this same thing happen to me... Take it to the dealer it cost me 460 The OTHER places wanted 700+l. I tried to to take the short cut and find cheaper places too...

but my oil pan was clogged and that causes the whistle noise and caused the car to cut off when ever it felt like it...lol

oh they called it the PCV Unit - that's what got replaced.

I haven't had any problems since I had that done

is it at all possible to take it to another mech? maybe an independant volvo mech not a dealer? if your vehicle under warranty? you can try cartalk.com to find a mech, just type in your zipcode and a bunch will pop up with peoples opinions of them.
