Greetings,

My battery light comes on during initial acceleration, but goes off once it gets to speed. Could it be water in the battery, new battery? It's getting worse over time.

Thanks,
Fred

No, a dud battery will not trigger any instrument panel warning light to illuminate but an alternator not pushing out enough volts will.

I suspect either a worn or stretched serpentine belt is allowing the alternator to slip for a short period of time (symptoms: dull or flickering battery warning light) until the alternator comes up to normal operating speed, then everything appears O.K.

Another area to consider is the belt tensioner which may well have seen better days and, subsequently, is not putting enough pressure on the belt to prevent belt slippage occurring.

However, whatever is causing it, if you leave it as it is, the slippage will cause rapid deterioration to the belt or the belt might simply break, and a broken belt is a completely different kettle of fish.

Have a mechanic check out both the tensioner and the belt to see where the fault may be and have it corrected before you experience major problems.
