Err, actually, the steering ball-end IS sold separately. And of the years i've owned by Volvo, i've already changed them, at least once.

i've been refering to it as the inner tie rod, the steering ball-end. Does it require any special tools to replace? and is it a pain in the butt to get at and replace? and how is it secured to the steering rack? i'm thinking about replacing them and can't really afford any down days for the wagon, i need to drive it most days, so want to be prepared before I get into it.

I'm also wondering why you replaced the ones that you replaced ? ie. what kind of symptoms was your ride experiencing?

thanks Ampangbear

Farmer,

I used a PIPE wrench to separate the ball-end to the steering rack. And its not a very FUN thing to do too.

See if the ball-end has much play for now. If the play is more than 2 mms gap, then i'd say just replace it and settle it once and for ehem, a few years.
:)

Yep, only the front ones can be aligned.

i just checked the hayes manual and it says that there is a rear toe in adjustment.
i do imagine that tire wear would show need for adjustment and my rear tires seem to be wearing evenly unlike the front ones

Errr.......

Both the front and rear wheels of an 850 Volvo can be adjusted for camber and caster (toe-in) so, even though rosso75 is not a great fan of Les Schwab, they were absolutely correct in saying a 4 wheel alignment is required.

A check with VADIS and the online manual showed yes, the TOe-IN can be adjusted, though not sure about the others due to the Delta-link independent system...

Sorry. My mistake, i always tend to ask my aligner to just do the front ones.
