Several months ago I struck a truck at abt 10kph, LF damage. Ever since, there has been a movement related shreik/whistle(?) in the front of my car. I did replace the FL wheel bearings. Noise is unaffected by gear changes, but it only occurs above 10kph. That wheel has a bad tie rod, but the steering position doesn't alter the sound. I was suspicious of a vacuum device in the dash, but from the drivers position, I can't locate it better. disconnecting the vacuum line into the dash made no difference. A V mechanic suggested the center bearing in the prop shaft, but I think it's from the front somewhere. I haven't checked tyre wear yet,but that's not hard. If it was the bearings I replaced, then I'd expect them to have failed by now, 3000km later. There's no obvious damage to the brakes, and the pads are only 12 mths old, they were almost new when I did this. My motor mounts are all broken, prob from this crash, and I just cant see what's rubbing or sucking air. It starts and runs ok, and does nothing it shouldn't that's pointing to what's wrong. My passengers can't tell me where it is. I can't prove the aircon /power steering area noise free whilst driving, but I can rev the motor in neutral without the noise. The hub was lightly machined to aid fitting the new bearings, and the new cones were pressed in proffesionally, but I don't know how tight they are.. I would have expected failure by now if things were bad. Sounds very metal on metal, or air noise. Ideas, typical probs anyone?

it might be the evaporative canister since it has a vacuum line running to it, and its close to the bumper ...

Thanks, and the throttle has to open a bit to drain it of the vapours!!!! I have replaced the 'drain' hose, but now I'm inclined to pull the unit out and check it. It may just be a pinhole. AFAIR I took out the hose fitting from the throttle body too, to fit an elbow which now faces forwards, rather than up, but the noise far precedes that, or the new hose. A no load rev up will not provide vacuum in the inlet to generate the noise on even a small leak either. Good thinking 99, I'll check it soon, and report.

there's some sort of valve on the output controlled by vacuum, and if I block all the top holes and blow in the outlet hole, then itis NOT airtight. Slow leak-which is what would make such a noise. So small, that changes in motor vacuum do not greatly affect it once the noise occurs due to limiting turbulence & reasonably constant vacuum etc. I'm not sure of the correct procedure for testing, but t'l'l look it up, and a used one too. Thank you very much!!! Well done! A pox on the imperial bolt fitter for the mounting tho'. Metric car==metric bolts-I don't tollerate imperial crap on my cars or bikes. Tooling up is too complex and expensive, and I've had my share of rubbish, Never again!!!
