I've been doing some idle net surfing and found out that the Volvo 440 GL and GLT were the only 400 series models sold in Oz.

The 440 GL/GLT came with the 2.0 litre F series Renault engine with a bore and stroke of 82.70 x 93.00 respectively.

The 400 series turbo has a bore and stroke 81.00 x 83.50.

With the above in mind, what would be needed to covert the 1998cc GLT engine to turbo? Does the Turbo engine have a stronger (forged) crank? If so, could the crank and conrods be used with custom pistons to give 82.70 x 83.50 bore and stroke?

Is the head the same on both engines? Will manifolds bolt straight up?

I want to fit the engine to my Renault 5 GT Turbo.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, forgot to say hello!

Heads are not the same, components diffrent, just not worth the hassle! if you want to do the conversion look for any 400 series turbo (i know you didnt have the 440t but might of had the 460t or most likely the 480t) as the engines are the same in the 400 series! ( you will be looking for a B18FT engine and wiring loom + i would recomend the gearbox as well (r5 boxes are too weak and will fail quickly!))

Thanks for the reply. The only 400 series models sold in Oz were the 440 GL and GLT. No 460 or 480 models made it to Oz as far as I can work out hence the conversion question.

I'm going to get the 1998cc GLT engine and have a play. If i'm going to go down the turbo route I will still need to get the exhaust manifold from another country that sold them like UK, possibly New Zealand?

I've put this post up on my UK Renault Club forum and have been told that the limiting factor with the 1721 Turbo lump is the camshaft, which holds the engine back to a 6500 rpm limit. Lots of guys in the club have done the 1721 turbo conversion and as you said have preferred to go with the Volvo gearbox, which is still a Renault Box but, with different ratios.

I know the 480 turbo was in oz, i had a richmod done to an ecu for a guy in australia, i think he said there were 1300 480's sold in oz of which aporx 50% where turbos. but quite a few will of been got rid of/crashed/killed off so probably are rare now!

would suggest looking at how much shipping of an engine from uk is, as i know a couple of people with turbo engines and boxes for sale! (probably be far to expensve but an idea, could also get the ecu richmodded for you For an extra £80 and that takes the boost to 13psi approx 175bhp and keeps all the ecu's saftey features)

oh ps manifolds are diffrent sizes as well so you would be looking at a custom made manifold to fit a turbo.

The turbo has a heron style head on it, so the head is flat and all the combustion iss done in the piston head. where as the othere engines the combustion appears in the cylinder head and the piston!

first pic is a turbo head, the second is a non turbo head, so you can see the differences.

Thanks Buddy, that's fantastic info. I've actually had an offer from a guy on another forum who is migrating to Oz and he said he'd give me some space to bring some parts over! Not sure if that will stretch to an Engine Gearbox combo but, I can only ask?

That said, if i'm going to the effort of bringing an engine over, is it worth going for a Clio 16v lump as these use the same blocks and bolt straight in?

In the meantime i'm on the hunt for an Aussie 480 Turbo

How much are your mates wanting for their engines?

Woz
