Hello Volvo-Forums!,

I have a 1987 Volvo 740GLE non-turbo with nearly 400,000 miles on it now. It usually runs pretty strong with a slower acceleration but that's fine. The problem that brings me here for your assistance is the fact that when I make hard turns or come to an abrupt stop my car dies.

It used to just die about once a month when i first got it and i just chaulked it up to being an old car, but now it dies at every red light, and when I make some hard turns off of the interstate, it's really got to the point where it annoys me. I have to put it in park and restart it, it always cranks about 2 times and fires right up. I figured it was something wrong with the air intake or the fuel system so I took the air filter out and it ran no differnt. I bought a new fuel filter but I haven't had time to install it. I think I blew a head gasket a few weeks ago too and I replaced the radiator, thermostat, air intake hoses, some radiator hoses, the head gasket, the exaust manifold gasket, the valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and I changed the oil and oil flilter because it was due.

I don't think their are any hoses out of place because I have a service manual and I have another volvo to look at and every thing seems to be in place, but ever since I did this work it dies more frequently but gets better gas mileage too.

I found this similar thread but it was for a 940, which I assume has some vairation of the same engine, b230?. http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?show...c=22841&hl=dies

If anyone thinks it's the same problem as the other car it sounds pretty easy to fix, if you think that it could be a combination of things, just let me know, and if you think finally changing my fuel filter would help, I'll get on that asap, i just didn't want to take the fuel line out of place with a full tank of gas.

Thanks in advance,

James

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when it idles it mostly idles at about 900 rpms, and when it dies it drops down to zero and either bounces back up to 1100 or stay at zero and dies.

I found this and wondered what yall meant by error codes, I don't have any warning lights coming on except the occassional oil light and my washer fluid. Was yall using a machine like that plug into the car at autozone? I've never used one of these machines so I don't quite understand what yall mean by error codes.

Try looking through the Swedishbricks or Turbobicks FAQ's

James,
On error codes: you're exactly right -- it's the code from an OBD (onboard diagnostic) or OBD ii (second generation). I don't know the years, but ours are too early, as far as I know. In any event, OBDii is I believe 1996 and later.

As a guess only, the first thing I thought of, before reading the rest of your post, was "fuel filter." I'm not very knowledgeable, but the turn and sudden stop sounds like fluid not getting where it's supposed to for long enough to make the engine cut out. I've also been a passenger recently when the vehicle starting cutting out on the highway, and it turned out to be a fuel filter, making me paranoid of old fuel filters even since. Good luck, and please keep us posted. Hope you have many more miles ahead!
Cheers,
Ed

Check for a vacum leak on the inteake manifold gasket, clean up and adjust trottle body, check the fuel pressure.
Thank you for asking VOLVO SPEC.

when it dies, after you start it again, does it smell heavily of fuel? that could indicate the return fuel line to the tank is blocked or kinked.

Also it could be our air idle control valve that is suspect, someone else here will more likely to have the details on checking and or cleaning it.

Matt
