I have a 1997 850 non-turbo with a manual transmission. It failed emissions test because the OBDII status indicators for the Catalyst and Oxygen Sensors still show "NOT READY". I have reset the ECU cleared all codes stored and put the car through 3 complete Volvo Drive Cycles. All of the readyness codes have gone over to "READY" EXCEPT for the Catalyst and Oxygen Sensors. No fault codes are being thrown. The O2 sensors are new. :puzzled:

The same thing is happening on another 1997 850 with an automatic transmission.

Any suggestions?

silly question, new sensors, okay, but are they seated correctly?

I dont know if this helps, but try hard-booting the system.
(Personally, i dont like to do this myself but sometimes, even after deleting and rectifying the error codes, the performance sucks. Only after hard-booting, it restores power back to the car).

Hard-booting = Disconnect the battery and leave it for sometime...

Not a silly question. Yes they are seated properly. Already did a hard reset, then ran the 3 drive cycles. Thus bringing me here.

OK, the message says that the O2 sensor is the problem, right? And the sensors are NEW? Any chance that the NEW sensors are faulty? I assume you're using a right part number product.

Can test-swap with a friend nearby?

Yes these are Volvo parts NOT OEM, Bosch, or aftermarket and I have even tried a second NEW set of O2 sensors on the off chance the 1st set was faulty out of the box. Same thing. I'm now wondering if it's a bad ECU. I understand there are 3 possible units for this model year with manual transmission. I'm trying to avoid this major expense.

here's another silly question, and it's silly to me because i've done it toooo many times, when you removed the old ones and installed the new ones, might there have been something that was left behind in the removal and that might be blocking the new sensors from functioning?

3 possible units? Really?
I am sorry i dont know about that.
But if you ask me, i am thinking possibly some wiring somewhere.
A bad ECU is indeed possible, but you dont have to replace them immediately. Test-swap it out first and see if that works.

There is nothing indicating the sensors are not working properly. Otherwise I'd be setting DTC's. And you can correct me if I'm wrong on this. There are no fault codes. It's the Readiness state that is not resetting in the ECU for Catalyst and Oxygen Sensors.

OK, spoke to a old-timer mechanic friend of mine on this, while we dont have strict emissions control over here, he has been keeping tabs on issues like this.

According to him, you'll have to continue let the engine run and go through the cycle, for another round. ANd then see if that changes. He doesnt have a proper explanation for this though, but it is worth a try, if you want to.

Sorry if that's not very helpful.

You're NOT going to believe this........... :o_75:

I finally called DMV Emissions division and was told that 1996 Volvo's with non-turbo engines will PASS emissions testing as long as there are no DTC's, the MIL is functioning and readiness is working in most of the modes but this car is EXEMPT from readiness monitors for Catalyst and Oxygen Sensors!

This, after a letter to all repair shops from DMV stating no more than 2 not ready codes will be acceptable. And the Catalyst and Oxygen Sensors MUST be ready.

Cleared the codes and did another VOLVO drive cycle, it PASSED!
