Hi,

I have a '96 turbo wagon in which the turbo pressure gauge doesn't seem to ever move. From other posts, I gather that if there were problems with the turbo I'd notice changes general engine performance. Engine seems to run fine, but no 'kick' when I punch the gas, just a steady acceleration.

What diagnostics can I do to tell if there is something in need of repair? No check engine light, fuel consumption about 20 mpg (25 hwy).

one huge boost leak? have you traced the air line for the boost gauge?

unless he has completely blown all the seals and the turbo is toast.

Its not just the gauge then. I suspect even the turbo is not working.

Does the guage go into vacuum at idle?
If it doesn't move at all I would look under the hood at the boost feed line. By where the tube goes from the Radiator to the air box there is a black or white line that runs from inside to the intake. Also there is usually a small rubber line by the tube. Also make sure you didn't blow the elbow off the intake.

You still might have a turbo problem but check the hoses first. Even if the turbo is totally dead the guage should still show vacuum.

exactly, i found that out easily due to having a seperate boost guage installed, the high heat caused weakness in the plastic lines, if its broken, spring for OEM or a full plastic type hard line. Rubber lines flex with the changes in vac and boost pressure. This gives false readings to the sensors and the gauges. This is even more so if you PATCH the line. Cheaper to fix this first, then that will tell you if your getting boost at all. When my turbo went out i shot a flame.

You may want to go for the silicone ones for that. Its cheap and easy.
I've tried patching the hoses (was in the middle of a pitstop on a highway), it doesnt last. Short-term OK.

You're right. My mistake. The gauge should still be fluctuating in the black/unshaded area. Just doesnt push into the white/shaded area.

I found one small hose (fresh air intake hose?) that was disconnected from a much larger diameter hose coming from the big plastic box with "turbo" on top of it. The other end of this hose has an elbow that is corroded and torn. I'm not sure where to find a replacement hose since it looks like there is a Y-junction, but maybe not. It's tight down there.

fcpgroton.com you must remove the airbox to access the joint.

Go to the website Greek mentioned, and have a look at the airhose and tell us which PART exactly was disconnected. The one on the bottom, or the one at the top part. Just to get a clearer image of the issue at hand.

it's David, not Paul, but that happens often. The hoses I found were disconnected from the Turbo air intake hose, as identified using Greek's website (thnks), one at each end.


The gauge still does not move, and I may be experiencing a placebo increase in power for the lower gears. I don't see any other holes in my hoses.

I just encountered another problem too, but with the A/C switch probably unrelated...

OK,OK. Back to the issue.

You mean BOTH the vacuum lines where disconnected?
The one on top is connected to the Turbo Controller Valve, while the one below is connected to the intake manifold.

Try hardbooting the ECU. I hope you dont have any lambda lights. If you do, read them first.
