Hey, hows it going? I've got a 2002 s40 1.6. I've owned the car for a few months and on-the-whole its been great. The cars covered 50K and has a pretty good service history, expept the last service was missed. Upon purchase of the car I was quick to sort this with a full service. Initially the car had a bit of a dead spot when cold in 1st between 2000 - 3000rpm. I took it to my local specialist and they flushed the engine old, added treatment to the fuel and cleaned the variable timing value (or something like that). Now it runs nice. One thing still remains though - intermitantly I get probs starting the car. I go to turn over the car and I have to let the starter run for about 10secs before it catches. The starter motor turns well and when the engine does starts it does with no hesitation. It will do this once or twice a week. Any ideas? Sorry to go on a bit! Cheers for any feedback. :57:

Im not sure about in the U.K. you will need to check. But here in the U.S. we had the same problem with our cars. There was a special sheild that we needed to install around the speed sensor. That would stop it from reading interference to the sensor.
Check with you local dealer about the sensor sheild.

Thanks for the info. Any idea how this sensor shield rectifies the starting problem? My car is two and ahalf years old and is one of the last of the mk1 s40's built. Wouldn't Volvo of thought to address this prob after around 7 years of model production?

The sheild stop interferance to the sensor.Something interfers with the signal to the sensor.

I would have thought they would have addressed the issue earlier but I think they just got it figured out in the last year or two.
