Hi there,

I have the 08 d5 XC90

it is claimed to be combined city and hwy driving of 9L/100KM (26mpg)

but I am getting only 10.7L/100KM (22mpg)

MPG in US gallons

is this the norm for the diesel or should I be concerned?

Hmm - s it your style of driving? Are you nailing it at the lights all the time? Mine sits around 26-28 consistantly.

I wonder if its also to do with my weight? I am close to 110kg's

I am going to check the tyre presssure as well

i don't think its your weight. the fact that you don't do any steady driving. driving int he city or around town will lower your overall average. steady driving being highway or open road, without coasting. cruise control type of driving. if possible, go for a loooooooong drive with the cruise on at a steady legal speed and see what you achieve.

Hi,

I also own a 2008 XC90 sport.
I also have a fuel consumption of about 10,5 L/100km when driving in city/urban surroundings. (average reading of the on board computer)
When I take a long trip on a highway I can get it to 9,8 or even a bit lower when it's a dry and warm day (>20°C)

If it rains the consumption goes up by +- 1L. (because of 4WD?)

Also the on board computer lies about 1L, the actual consumption is about 1 Liter higher dan the reading.

good to see some others having the same experience as me.

the other annoying feature is the km's to empty thing.

never achieve it, but then again have never tried to run until empty.

PS - how many km's can you go when the empty light comes on?

The car computer thing says 100+ km's but who knows?

Hi,

When the yellow light goes on I usualy make sure I get to a fuel station within the
next 50 km. (or as soon as possible)
I never felt the urge to try how far i can go before the engine stalls :-)

PS : The light goes on when the "remaining distance" reaches a number
below 100 km.
But in my opinion this "remaining distance"-figure is a bit depending on your fuel consumption of that moment, so it varies a bit depending on your driving style of the moment.

PS2 : I notice that my xc90 D5 sport is producing some "grey/black" exhaust fumes in the rear view mirror, which leads to a black bumper after a week or so. Is somebody experiencing the same thing ? The dealer doesn't seem to make a big deal about it.

2003 XC90 D5 130.000 km

on average between 7.8 and 8.0 l/100 km

extremes:

- when driving 100 km/h for a long period (cruise control) --> 5.9 l/100 km
- on the 'autobahn' through Germany at 160 + km/h heavily loaded --> 18 l/100 km

much depends indeed on your speed, the hight if it and the constantness (or is this bad english?)

also lots of black smoke especially when cold (last winter the snow went totally black under the exhaust pipe).

about the computer: the consumption shows about 10% less than in reality in my experience

regards,
Peter.

I have a 2006 D5 AUT and the car consumes about 10.5L. I have tried different types of Diesel (normal and "power") and that did not have any influence on the consumption ...
On the highway it consumes about 1 liter less ... if you don't exceed 120 km/hr

no modifications made, everything original

I have to say I bought this car from a friend who allways drives very economically (read very careful, no sprinting). I took over his driving style, it is such a nice car that I enjoy cruising at legal and below speeds.
It has Geartronic transmission. I almost always use the motor breaking when having to stop so selecting manual and gearing down. At the red lights I select neutral and when pulling up I select Drive and do so gently.

Happy cruising.
Peter.
