We're under the hood again, '82 245 DL auto, B21F, k-jet injection.

Intermittent stalling while running - whether cold or hot; at idle, coast, or under throttle, high or low fuel level - and no-start. Does not give any warning, no sputter, just cuts off dead. Sometimes starts right back up, sometimes not, but always eventually starts.

Question - How many fuel pump/fuel injector relays does this car have? Have replaced green under-dash fuel pump relay. Are there more in this car? Hard to tell from wiring diagram in Chilton manual. I thought only one, but figured I'd better check.

Car did this a year and a half ago. Found loose connection at fuel pump in tank with evidence of arcing, repaired and tested, but didn't fix problem. Tweaked a lot of wires and connections, used gas drier, eventually car just quit stalling (even took it on a 2500 mile round trip), not sure what we did!

Now the gremlin's back.

More problems, questions, but will wait for input on this one! I am searching archives, but not finding a lot on '82's, not sure if remedies for 86's, etc., apply...

THANKS SO MUCH!!! I'm so glad you guys are here!
Regina

A ps - car won't stall when driving very hard - i.e. holding manually in lower gears, foot to floor, full throttle. Can't drive like this all the time though (dogs thrown all around the car, cops not happy)

How long does it take at idle for it to stall?

You’re loosing fuel or spark - the first step is figuring out which one it is. I'm pretty sure fuses 5 and 7 are used for the fuel pumps, run a jumper wire on the left side of these and see if the stalling goes away. Clean these fuses and measure the voltage on the jumper wire to ground when installed - suggesting a bad relay or excessive current draw from a pump on the way out.

For this year Kjet had one green relay, LH had 2 metal ones.

This could also be the AMM, unplug it with the power off and see if the stall goes away.

Robert,

Thanks so much for the reply. Partner was skeptical of my answer (and I was starting to doubt myself as well!), wanted the experts to tell us how many fuel pump relays there were :)

In answer to your question, the amount of time it takes to stall seems to be completely random. Sometimes it will start thenimmediately stall whether hot or cold, sometimes it will stall after running for moments to minutes. Then there are those mystery times when it will run w/o a problem (this hasn't happened in the last few trips). Always cranks, seems to catch and cuts off clean - no sputter or cough.

yes, #5 & 7 are the feed and fuel pump fuses. Have cleaned, de-oxed, checked all and replaced any faulty fuses (first order of business when got the car running - had been sitting for 5 years when I got it almost two years ago). Will try the jump/measure voltage

Did replace the one green fuel pump relay, though old one seemed operational.

Will also try the air mass meter idea - but where is it located? Does the '82 k-jet have one?? Having trouble finding it. Just subscribed to "alldata" and already finding some glitches...
We did spend several frustrating hours trying to find a wire to the "air/fuel control unit" as described in the chilton manual, never could find it!

Wow, thanks, that k-jet site looks like a terrific reference.

Will report back with our findings, and will no doubt have more questions.

Thank you so much!

Replace fuel filter too, and check fuel pressures-K-jet is 68psi up to regulating/distributing device on air intake, the 42-68 psi on each injector line, depending on the airflow. NB there is a cutout switch holding the pumps OFF unless the motor is drawing air!!!!!! If supply pressures cannot be met without stopping fuel flow, then filter or pump is bad, if delivery pressure only is bad, then regulator needs service. excess regulated presure will make motor rich, making it stall often, partic when stopping or being put into drive/rev. You'd also need some throttle to keep it running. Mileage will be terrible. K-jet service is expensive, unless DIY-and that's a fiddly technical job, it takes some expertise, Bosch will do it, at a price, iff they can get parts. ASK FOR QUOTE FIRST! Ask here if anyone will do it for you cheaper?

thanks mxm - we will add check fuel pressure to the list. Did replace filter not too long ago, but maybe something got in there and clogged her up. So the fuel press. test will be a good one. The mileage has always been great, car doesn't act rich, so not as suspicious of the "excess pressure" theory, but who knows!

And sorry to be a dunce, but what does "NB" mean? having trouble deciphering that one (long day and too many visions of wires and connectors spinning in my brain...)
