Any opinions on the 2001 vs 2002 V70XC with similar mileage?

The 2002 is $2000 more, but the 2001 will apparently cost around $1000 to ship to Colorado. So the real question is whether the 2002 is worth $1000 more for my "real" cost.

Per Carfax, the 2001 seems to have always lived in Colorado, while the 2002 has just been in Virginia. And just one owner for each.

I know the blue book value is onl a few hundred more for the 2002, but I'm more interested in any undocumented differences between the 2 years. Since it was a new model in 2001, I'm thinking that at least some unlisted problems were fixed in the second year. In particular, I've read about 2001 transmission problems.

One new standard feature I see for 2002 is "Emergency Brake Assist", and the 2002 gets 2mpg better:

While I am not an XC owner, generally speaking, I've noticed that a lot of the 2001 models have increased "issues."

I have a 2004 V70, and am participating in a vehicle reliability study over at True Delta.

Based on all of this, I would lean towards the 2002 (it also sounds like you are too), but I would also highly recommend finding a good Volvo mechanic, asking him/her questions, and having the car inspected by him/her.
And, don't forget to ask about the repair histories!
