I'm considering replacing my rear bulbs with LEDs - for the rear lights, brake lights and indicators.

Will installing LEDs in place of the conventional bulbs cause the "bulb failure" warning light on the instrument cluster to light up? If so, is there a solution?

Cheers!

Not sure, Ken. But the one that Suhairi bought was of no problems. But the costs, like ADOI!

Heheh.

Thanks for quick response. How much did Suhairi spend on his LEDs?

I've seen LED's in foreign websites sold at very affordable prices.... looks very tempting to buy and install.

More than RM2500, but that didnt include shipping. I think he was in germany for work, and on the way back decided to window-shop in one of the nearby auto places.

He also had to pay some duties at the airport, though. I dont remember how much exactly.

Ampangbear,
I think we are not discussing the same items!
From the cost of RM 2500, I suspect Suhairi's "LED" appears to be the entire rear lamp cluster replacement with "crystal" type lamps. These are sold on e-bay and also available now locally. Personally, I don't like the rear "crystal" type lamps which suit Japanese cars ie EVO/Imprezza better.

I'm only considering the replacement of the normal filament bulbs with LED bulbs. Thus cost should be less than RM 100.

There is no valid reason why they should.

The bulb failure sensor unit measures and compares the current flow between a set of comparable bulbs and, if the current flow is equal, the sensor unit doesn't 'see' any out-of-balance situation and therefore nothing happens.

If the current flow differs between a comparable set of bulbs, then the unit will 'see' the out-of-balance situation, the sensor unit will then operate, switching on the bulb failure warning indicator light on the dashboard.

some advance/auto zone/pep boys stores are carrying a resistor set to help with this problem. LED draw much less and are setting off bulb warnings in most cars that have that feature.

ask around at your local shopes.
good luck!

Oh, i've even spoken to guys at SpeedWorks and a few shops around the Subang motoring area about this. N1Racing, etc. Most say you need to go to an electrician to get this done, while the rest are just simply too blur to understand my question.

Explored that already, dude.

If you are still interested, you may want to do it yourself.

P/S:
Which is why i am now slowly learning about all this soldering stuff, here and there, dude.
