Started yesterday, was only intermittent once. Now seems to stay in NO START condition. Checked voltage to the Starter- GOOD, checked voltage on the solenoid during START: 0 volts

All the accessories operate in Position II. WHen you turn the key all the way (Pos 4?), the dashboard lights stay lit, headlights turnoff (I believe they are supposed to during Crank). Nothing is happening from the starter.

I checked the Starter Relay, tested good. I know that there must be other ignition lockouts that can disable cranking, but what are they?

Are there any Volvo experts out there that can help? If I could get a PDF of the schematic would help immensely!

This is my first Volvo (6 month owner). Owned Saabs previously and have worked on them also.
Tony

Hi,

I have a very similar problem -- sometimes it won't start up after it's been off for just a few minutes! I know nothing about cars and the dealer is saying that maybe it's the starter motor -- but I have to bang on the starter motor while turning the key as a "diagnostic" since they couldn't recreate the problem.

This sounds like a load of baloney to me. Anyway, I'd also like to know how you handle this problem, since it is intermittent for me. I'm usually stuck by myself, so this "diagnostic" test is difficult for me... I'd hate to just replace the starter motor and have it actually be a problem elsewhere.

Thanks,
Tara

Hi tara,
You may a different problem, not sure though. It is definitely not the starter for me. The problem is intermittent. At the moment the car is working (was dead for one day, then started working the next day). It has been trouble free since.
I am surprised that you can bang on the starter. On my car it is rather hidden. I checked the main voltage on the starter, and it is Good. The solenoid voltage on my starter was Zero, and that it is the problem. When the ignition is turn to position 4 (Crank), the solenoid is not being activated (which actually cranks the engine).

So on my car something is keeping the solenoid from be activated. I need a schematic to further troubleshoot. But nobody on this forum has been able to help me...

I have 2 Saabs, and I know exactly how the same circuit works. This is my first Volvo so I was hoping to get a hand from a Volvo expert....

I have the same problem. Did you find out what the problem was? When I turn the keys all the lights, radio, etc. turn on; but nothing happens after that. The engine doesn't make any noise. I know it isn't my battery because I just replaced that a month ago. Unfortunately I can't even get started to take it to my mechanic.
Where is the starter neutral switch located?
any help would be great. thanks.
