g'day folks. I've been searching the posts to see what my 98 v70's rattling problem might be and it seems very common that the strut mount and/or bushing might be bad. The steering wheel and front end in general rattles/rumbles/shakes a ton while turning right and just a little on the straights.

I originally brought it to a local shop who promptly replaced the ball joints ($650) which didn't fix a thing. When I brought it back they told me everything was "tight and right" until I pointed out my guess. They kind of agreed. Since they want almost $400 to do just the mount, I decided to do it myself. I haven't done it yet.

I wasn't going to post anything until I read something about the engine mount (damper?) on the top of the motor. Mine appears broken, at least the rubber inner portion.

Would this also contribute to the rattle/rumble?

Thanks for your help...

(p.s. this was my reply to a related topic, but I was unsure if I'd get any responses. Sorry for the duplicate)

Rattles and rumbles I would agree with you to look at the spring seats and sway bar end links. Just ordered heavy duty spring seats from IPD myself, haven't had a chance to install them yet, but mine rattle like crazy. Your worn top motor mount should lead to more engine shake, which on my car added a shake that I noticed when coasting or braking. The lower transmission torque mount also added similar engine movement, but not noise. I ordered the newer square mount and firewall mount from FCP for a fair price. I chose not to go the poly bushing route since I am not a fan of vibration or additional cabin noise. Should take you about an hour to do without rushing.

Thanks for info. I can rent a strut compressor for about $9/day. I've never replaced a strut or strut parts before, but I'm no stranger to automotive work.

Do you have any tips for me before I dig into replacing the strut parts? One guy suggests an impact wrench. I assume I have to remove the strut completely??

I've got a mechanic down the street from me that is going to redo my entire suspension Eibach springs/FSD struts and shocks, sachs mounts, IPD spring seats, bump stops, IPD 25/25mm sway bars since I don't own a lift(not that you truly need one).
Just feeling lazy with this particular project, plus he can do it much faster. Impacts I believe are good for removal, but not for actually installing as they may lead to damage, don't quote me on this. Several posts floating around on the different forums on this project, just need to hunt them down. Volvo Virgin posted this link http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?show...rut+replacement

I would say $50-60 for mount (only £30 in uk) then one and a half hour labour max for job. If $350 sound expensive for one and a half hours work then yes your getting screwed.
