My Volvo S70 started to make grating and crunching noises when I opened the drivers door, after a quick look to check that the bolts were all secure, I realized that the guide between the hinges going into the door was binding up at different door positions. I can't tell if anything is broken, it doesn't seem like it though. Its as if there is a detent on the guide to hold the door open at different positions and its binding up at each of those spots, almost like it needs some grease. I sprayed the entire guide, inside the door, and the hinges with white lithium grease but it still binds up.

I've been told it could be the door stop mechanism thats broken. A friend said it has a spring that hold that door at 2 positions when you open the door.

Does anyone have any ideas about how this mechanism works or what could be causing it to bind up?

Thanks

your middle hinge is busted. get a new one and install, and the grunching will go away. or, you can do the lazy-a** way and just remove the little screw in the middle, the hinge will come apart but the door won't stay open so be prepared for the dreaded shin hit when you park on hills.
