I was trying to post this message below to the forum but without luck. After hitting to post it goes to a blank webpage at http://www.volvoforums.com/postpro.asp and does not list my question on the forum. Maybe it is a question you know the answer to????

I just got a 1988 740. It needs new rear disc brake pads and rotor so I began taking it apart. While driving out the pin which holds the pads, a chunk of the caliper broke out by the lower pin. I began looking for a rebuilt rear caliper on line and discovered there are three ATE ones they used on the 740. After looking for quite a bit, I cannot find a 36, 38, or 40 anywhere on the caliper. Does anyone know if there is something you can measure to determine which of the three I have???

you could have lucas or bendix too ... i have lucas on my 740. erm this doesnt help much ... but at least you know, look for any distinctive markings, clean it off carefully and you might find a serial number.
