My 740 has had a TERRIBLE rattle for a few months now... we knew it to be part of the exhaust ... expected it to be the catalytic converter... ironically though when we went to look underneath it today we found that it was acutally just this small hunk of metal embracing (towards the front) the area where the exhast goes from two pipes to one.

Something like that... the metal seems to fit over it.. whole unit is about 10 inches long.

Its loose and has nothing holding it except its own shape.. (been spot welded on its seams)

Is it safe to yank it? We felt so but I figured id check where ppl might know first lol

THANKS!

it might be a brace to keep the two pipes together when they become one. so i guess when you say it is being held on by its shape that you already pulled it off? if so, with the engine running, is there exhaust coming out of the joint? if so, have it re-welded on, if not, leave it off. what's the worst that'll happen, your exhaust will fall off and everybody will think you have a corvette v-8 under the hood.

I ended up taking it off... underneath i just found a solid metal "two into one" pipeline... was really simple all solid and welded - the crap hanging off of it seems to do absolutley nothing so i threw it away lol...

Now to put on the flowmaster 60 series :)

When i get it of course LOL

Friends and I are going to pimp out the station wagon take it to the local drag strip as a joke... :)

there wont be anything better then watching a 16 year old station wagon with 260,000 miles on it do the quarter mile.

yeah i took mine off. all it is, is a heater plate for the warm air feed which your engine would use to help start itself in the winter, there should have been pipe going to your air box from it, but it doesnt matter if it wasnt there.
