My wife's 95 850 GLT wagon with 130,000 miles starts and runs rough in damp weather. This morning she went out after it rained and got about a mile with the car running rough and the check engine light came on. She brought it back and took my car. I started her car and looked under the hood and could see sparks firing from under one of the rubber boots where the spark plug wire connects to the distributor cap. I'm assuming this is the problem for the rough idle in damp weather, and now caused the check engine light (fuel not burning properly). It has been years since I worked on cars. I tried to disconnect and reconnect the wire, but I'm not sure if the wires are integral to the cap, or separate. Any suggestions on what needs to be done? How do I clear the check engine light?

get new wires and cap. and you need to read the codes and erase them.

Do EXACTLY as what Greek suggested. Forget about saving a few bucks on the present cables. Toss them into the bin and get new ones.
