I've been having some issues on my 2000 S80 with a smell that I can only describe as 'dirty' for the last few months and I am trying to see if anyone has anything similar.

I had the entire interior of the car detailed, I had the Volvo dealer use the cleaning agent that kills the microbes in the AC system, and replace the pollen/cabin filter.

After driving the car for 30 minutes, after being nice and clean in the AM after a shower, your hair and clothes will smell dirty (but not strong - very faint). You can't really even tell until you step out of the car and someone smells you who hasn't been in it.

When the AC is on, there is no smell that I can tell - the air seems 'conditioned.' My concern is when the AC is off, it doesn't smell too good - and during the hot summer months the afterblow is blowing inside the cabin while the car is off, further moving around this 'unconditioned' air I think is smelling up this car even worse.

I'm concerned about having my pregnant wife and young daughter in this car with this unknown smell. I'm about to drive it off a cliff or right through the dealer's front window if I can't close this issue soon.

Anyone?

it's your evaporator or the condensor. it's the unit in the firewall, it grows mold after awhile. some of those jiffy oil places offer a cleaning service. otherwise you will have to go to a dedicated a/c shop and have them open it up and spray the inside. or, you can give it a go yourself. now, to be honest, i've never done it, so i can't tell you if it's easy or not. good luck and keep us posted.
