Hello all,

I have just taken out my standard air filter to replace it with a K&N panel filter.

The bottom of the factory air box is covered in a thin layer of grey foam. Is this required? surely it is just a further restriction.

can i take it out?

No its not required its there for noise dampening. Its a common mod to remove all the foam out of the airbox to get a better induction noise. You will actually hear the turbo with it removed, its not massively loud or anything just you can hear its there.

Theres the bit in the bottom and also another load in the lid. I took mine out carfully so i could put it back in if i wanted. It never went back in the car though.

drove home from work last night about 15 miles - the difference is amazing from stock filter to K&N - have just been out and pulled the foam out of the airbox, will go for a drive in a bit and see what its like

wow! just got back - its a really good mod.

not too loud or intrusive, but worthwhile in my opinion. cant get over how much the stock filter smothers the car :liebe011:

could the factory air box be drilled to allow further passage of air?

It will give you slightly more noise but will allow hot air into the intake so may reduce power a little. Personally i wouldnt bother as when you want to sell the car youll have to explain why the airbox has holes in it.

you can always find a junker and get the airbox, try the hole trick and see if it works. the consensus on the 850 forum is split down the middle, half who have done it have reported gains, while half said it didn't do anything. the way i see it, if the inlet on the bottom of the box where airflow comes in is a tiny hole, boring it out to make it larger would increase the airflow in. i've done it on my 'busa motorcycle and saw an increase in throttle response. in my R, i had removed it and replaced it with a cone filter but drilled out the bottom plate. to me, the throttle is more crisper, to me anyway. either way, the k&n filter is a plus, as you have seen. good luck and keep us posted.
