About 6 months ago I had the outter seals replaced on my transmission(the pan and drive shaft) on my Volvo 240 DL 1989. After they replaced they seals they slightly overfilled my transmission but not by much....looking at the dip stick, when the engine was hot, it was about 1/4 past the Max mark. I check my transmission fluid once every a month and it stayed like this for the past 6 months. When getting gas today I checked my transmission and noticed that it had dropped half way between the Min and Max mark. Could this be a result of the leaks that I just had replaced? What should I do?

Based on your information, that is a tough call. Are you able to look at the transmission yourself?

I have an '85 DL, with 360K on it, and it leaks on the front seal, it was constantly giving me H**L on the rear seal (tailshaft.) After replacing the tailshaft bushing and rear seal several times, I noticed my tailshaft (actual part of the transmission), had an abnormal wear pattern. I figured the reason I was having to replace the bushing and seal so often was because of the abnormal wear. I only replaced it two weeks ago, so the jury is still out, but so far, I haven't seen any leaking. But, time will tell. I was having to add 1/2 a pint every 6 weeks.

If you want to validate the source of your leak, go to a car wash (self) and use the engine de-greaser setting and thoroughly spray the undercarriage of your car. Then, use soap and high pressure rinse. Later, check the underside to verify it is clean and free of any leaking oil. Wait a couple of days, then check again. Wherever you see oil, you have a leak. If it is the same place(s) the seals were replaced, they either did a poor job or sold you a bad set of goods.

Good Luck,

Breadman
