Sorry if this is an FAQ...I currently drive a 940 estate (approx 185k miles so far) which is beginning to develop problems with increasing frequency, from an economic point of view my mechanic suggested I look for a lower mileage one. So my questions are:

- Everyone seems to agree that the B230 series engines will go on for ever, but can the same be said about the 6 cylinder engines - in other words, should I look at 960s or stick to 940s?

- (difficult to say I know but I'm asking on the off-chance) is the fuel economy noticably better on the 2.5 litre than the 3.0 litre? The majority of 960s seem to have the 3.0 engine and I can only just about afford to keep my 940 filled up (I'm in the UK by the way!)

Thanks in advance for your replies. The 940 is my first Volvo; now I've driven one for a couple of years I pretty much don't want anything else, so I need to make sure I buy the right one that will last me.

I have my 97 960 (3.0L) for 9 months and I really like it as well.
I never driver a 940 so it's hard to compare them. However, I feel hard to fill up my 960's tank, I am in US and I am a student. I think it really drink a lot of gas, maybe 15-18 miles per gallon in the city and around 22 on hwy.
Not sure how is the fuel economic of the B230 engine but if you gonna to buy a B6304 I think you should concern about the gas price.

BTW, I just counted, 15-18 MPG is about 13.2-15.4 litter/100KM. I am from China, I know this way is more popular in a lot of countries.

well i can say the b200 engine on my 740 (auto tho) does about 22mpg regardless and hat car weighs 2.5 tons. i would prefer the 3.0 litre myself, but i know what your on about the fuel costings, its awful. 2.5 litre would be more economical in the long run, but if you dont wanna sacrifice the power then its the 3 mate.

I have the B200 manual and the car does 9/10 Km/L - 21.1/23.5 Mil/Gal (US)
I think the 3L 960 angines are much less reliable since they are mad from aluminum, the 2.5L is considered the reliable one from the two (3L/2.5L) but I think that if you want the most reliable engine you should stick to the B230, It is a simple engine and simple == reliable.
