Volvo V40 1.8 Auto 2002:

Last 1000 miles noticed a low noise from the off-side front wheel that is now annoying as more evident (to me!). It is not emitting from the tyre. I though t might be worn bearings.

Just took it into a Tyre Garage to be checked over. Bearings, tracking, rods, steering, suspension all in fine condition. Brake pads not sticking.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

My first thought is tyre noise. It can sound just like a wheel bearing rumbling, so much so I changed all my wheel bearings before the tyres. The worst tyres for this seem to be pirellis and the noise gets much worse as the tyre wears. What tyres do you have fitted? the best tyres for noise on S/V40s are ones with a constant pattern like Toyo T1Rs or Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s and block type pattern tyres can cause rumbling(some worse than others).

Thanks for replies.

I did put the good tyres from the back onto the front, new on the back. I do use Goodyear with the pattern that follows the line of the car.

Noise was getting more evident (to me). Rich at the garage said it's either the wheel bearing or the drive shaft on that side. At service/ MOT I requested on a new bearing kit to be fitted on that wheel. Not solved. That was end of October. Rich says use the car until the noise is more apparent to confirm that it is the shaft, as this is quite expensive. So that is the 'state of play' to date!
