Can anyone tell me the difference between the 740 and the 240? I am trying to sell my 740 and was asked what the difference is and I have no clue. My 740 has the straight 4 cylinder, 5spd, rear wheel drive, ect. Thanks

Mostly just age mate. :) The 240 evolved into the 740 and on to the 940

Hi,

I think your 740 has fuel injection (since 1990) instead of a carborator and I guess an oxigen sensor as well, this gives you better gas milage then the 240 and it's a BIG +.

so did some of the later 240's(you can get 91 plate 240's in the uk). the main difference i think is obviously the shape, the sexual-ness (240's are just like porn for me nb: greek) and they are less suceptable to rust.

The engines have a stronger bottom end also i think aswell as i have heard that people have taken the bottom end from the old b21 engines and put in they're b200 b230's cos the piston rods are 13mm rather than 9mm.

Matt

Hi there..!

Used to own a very nice 240GL 1990 with Bosch FI.

It was swaying a little too much and dad feared for our safety. It was on 185/70/14 tyres.

Regretfully sold it off until I got the 740 a month later and found a whole new world between them.

The dude got the 240 and tried on a lower profile set of tyres (185/60/14), and damn...! the swaying was reduced more than half...! Nearly brought me to tears when I drove it...tougher than nails and my current 740 or the 940 (no offence, these are really comfy and good, but it's the sheer block of metal I missed, not to mention the engine growl - my mom missed that)

Tyres were filled to 31psi, while previously i was on 28psi tops and that got him a much better mileage...

Over here people are very reluctant to give up their 240s, prefering to hock off the newer 940 / 850 / etc...etc...etc...

One groupie would stand on his 240 bonnet everytime he change the porch's light...! not a single dent from a 63kg fellow in 2 decades....!

Oh well....at least the 240 is in good hands, and we would swap driving each other's cars anytime we wished...a great friend here...

driveforlife,
I hear you, there is something in that block of metal, I didn't know why I love the older cars but you pinpointed it beautifully.

Yeah...

I'm just envious of your 940 with the manual gearbox...

I'm trying to switch mine...just waiting for confirmation from the 940 section.

[sigh!] i sat through my dad's first 244gl, reminded me of the wooden horse of Troy, heck this was an Iron Elephant :460:

Blown engine sent it off for RM2000, something like US$500. Some guy made quite a bit from the spares...

Never seen a better 244gl around yet, lots of battered ones though - Old Soldiers that command great respect even from new Volvo owners.

We can't get enough of Volvos...!

The manual is fun to drive, I have lots of traffic circles in my neigberhood and I love to make the rearend power slide in second gear.
Wish I had a B230 Turbo, if this engine will die on me I will make the switch, guess I will have to wait for the next 300,000Km for that to happen.

I seldom see a very good maintained 240 for sale like the one attached, this one sells for 2500$.

Haven't tried that yet, sounds cool...

The 240 looks like a SE or Classic Version, judging by the alloys, could be wrong though...

Hey NDMFarms....keep the 740, then get the 240....
