Does anyone know how to remove the windsheild from a Volvo 850 without causing damage. and also installing one? I have a large scratch in mine and i've found a donor car, with a good winshield for only 30 bucks. I'd like to do it my self. But I dont know where to start. Any thoughts?

I've not done it myself but have seen it done before.

- Remove the wipers, trims at the bottom of the windshield & the sides.
- Using a thin steel wire (about 3 feet long), push it through the side of the windshield from the outside to the inside.
- Make a loop at the ends of the steel wire. You may need assistance from another person to do the next step.
- Using a sawing motion (ie, pulling back & forth) to cut the adhesive bonding the wind shield to the metal surround. Take your time & exercise care.
- Go round all the way & the wind shield can be removed.
- You'll need to clean the old adhesive from the metal surround before applying the fresh adhesive (some sort of silicon compound or something).
- Take your time to align the new wind shield.
- There's no need to press the wind shield down against the metal surround. Let the adhesive dry for an hour or two before replacing the trims.

Good luck.

Personally that is one thing I never wanted to mess with, and without the right tools you may have some trouble or risk possible windshield and/or body damage trying to remove/install a windshield yourself.

I would suggest calling a local windshield place and see what they would charge to come install it for you. They might be reasonable. The benefit would be if it should break or leak then paying them should cover replacement if they should damage it or have leaks. If you do it yourself, you're out a windshield and leaks can be difficult to correct (some are some aren't, but its a frustration nonetheless).

If you do it yourself, it will be alot easier if you pick up the right tools. Auto Parts stores carry some of the tools (not all usually), and some will even let you borrow them with a refundable deposit. For installing though I would suggest some window suction cups.

Go to your nearest harware store, and get the "rubber-saw". Its made of titanium string with jagged edges, and you can use that to SAFELY cut through the rubber insulation of the windshield.

You can DIY on this. I've seen it done many times already.
