My V dealer and an auto shop both say DEXRON 3 is an upgraded ATF suitable for our trannys (dealer was asked AW70). Both sources reported improvements in fuel mileage and operation using DEXRON 3 instead of 2.

I recommend all auto tranny people check with your dealer for correct oil, as it may have changed.

I will try it out and report back in a few weeks, after I've replaced my fuel filter near the rear wheel.

It was abt 200gm Gross. I'd say it's done it's time. It was a Ryco Z400, abt $aus70- from Repco, tho' there are cheaper versions if you trust where they're made. OEM price-I don't want to think about it. I recommend all buyers of these cars replace this filter by default on purchase, as I think that will prevent many troubles. Ditto fully service the motor and drive train. Expect serious brake maintnance, and steeering and suspension too these cars are too old not to be needingsuch work, and if it's not available in writing, then it's not been services or replaced.

Sellers areNOT to be trusted-they lie-often, and you can't afford to believe them unless there is some evidence of their claims. Get under it and look, see if it's clean and tidy or not. Look at gaskets, are they new or not. Used gaskets are trouble-always, unless made of neoprene. Dirty bolts means it hasn't been undone, oil stains mean a leak, hot smell means it overheats.

These things are old, and you HAVE to be pro-active in your maintenance. If you're offered something that hasn't been maintained, walk away, because it's too much trouble to fix when it's too late-and you can't tell the difference without several hours detailed expert examination.
