what parts can affect the mpg on a V70 2002 D5 ? my computer is reading 53mpg average but when i done a fill-up to fill-up it only worked out a 40mpg average. i know the computers can be a little out but shouldn't be that much !!
i have changed air filter and cleaned the two large rubber houses and cast housing that run along front of engine so far.

thanks
neil

Hi Neil

Here are a few ideas..........

I have a 2005 V70 D5 AWD. I roughly get around 51.6 MPG on a good run. However there are a few things I reguarly do to help this along.

1. Clear all weight out of the car (Eg take all rubbish out of the boot, doors, glovebox etc......)
2. clean the air filter housing and replace the stock filter with a K&N (or alike) filter (these filters can help increase fuel by upto 10%
3. Check your tyre pressures. If your tyres are not properly inflated this can cause the engine to work harder and use more fuel!
4. Wash the car regularly. Believe it or not a clean car has better aerodynamics than a dirty one!
5. I use redex diesel (in a blue bottle) every thousand miles or so. Simply pour a bottle every time you fill up. this will help keep your injectors clean and will improve your fuel economy.
6. Keep and eye of your oil level and make sure you are using the right oil for the engine!
7. Remove any roofboxes or any unnessecary weight. Lugging loads of stuff you dont need will take a huge amount of fuel.
8. Make sure your timing belt is properly aligned. I have seen cases in the past where poor alignment (even on a diesel) has reulted in just 18 MPG!!!!!!!

To be honest the trip computer is not 100% accurate but if you try these ideas, I'm sure you will see an improvement.

All the best and hope this helps!

Richard
