i have recently bought a 99 S40 T4 with 82k on the clock.

i have almost full service history print out from volvo - the 80k service was done at about 67k. would this have been a timing belt service? there is no sticker on the engine. there is no history after this.

car is clean and tidy and look very well looked after.

what would a ball park figure be for a timing belt replacement (UK) for this car?

(if it was not done at 67k)

thanks

Its about 2->3 hours of labor + the timing belt, waterpump, idler pulley and tensioner (the tensioner and belt should be replaced the rest are optional). I'm in the US so I can't tell you an actual price, labor, and parts prices don't directly translate.

You should be able to visually inspect the belt for any cracks(old and not replaced), and if your lucky there would be a sticker in the engine compartment labeling the date and mileage the timing belt was last replaced at.

Also your manual should describe what is replaced at each service, my 1998 has a table in the back describing the service and mileage that things are done at.

The timing belt isnt a hard job on these so shouldnt cost too much. If its got full Volvo service history ring a dealer to check its been done. If in any doubt change it though with parts listed in the post above. Dont forget to change the aux belt as well as people are starting to report them snapping if they dont and that takes the timing belt out with it.

would it have been a standard job as part of 80k service?

Its due around then but I doubt it would be part of a standard service. As i said if in doubt get it changed it causes massive damage of it goes.

If it was me and there was any doubt I would get it changed now. The last thing you want is the timing belt to snap and wish you changed it.
