I have an 850 Turbo Wagon that sat in the garage over the winter. It needs a new battery. Other than that, what fluids or other things should I check before trying to start it up? Thanks!

You should probably change the oil and brake fluid, brake fluid attracts water and you do not want it in your brake system. While you are at it, check the integrity of your brake pads since you will have to bleed the brakes in each wheel. Most oil they recommend you change it by the mile and/or every so many months and its usually no more than 12. You should also check the integrity of your serpentine belt it may show signs of dry rot. Thats all I can think of right now. Next time you do this I would disconnect the battery and place it somewhere out of the weather but off of the ground and NOT on concrete. It should be good to go.

Only thing I would add, is if you have a hard time starting the car, or it runs rough, consider draining the gas and replacing with new gas. Most gasoline now is designed to have a shelf life and will go bad.

Also, the rear seal can go bad in a car that sits too long, but I dont think yours has sat that long yet.

Good point. You could always use gas treatment also.

After only sitting "over the winter"? Gas really go that bad that fast? I've drug home a lot of crap that had been sitting for literally years, and they all smelled horrible when they ran, but they ran.

Not to start an arguement, as your point is valid in certain instances, but I personally think the risk of draining fuel, and subsequently having to dispose of it, is not worth it. The car has been sitting for what, 6 months? Put a battery in it and start it up. Run the tank near empty, then fill it up and change the oil. It's a Volvo, it'll be fine.

You are KIDDING me!
At this era of explosive fuel price, they do THIS?

They have been doing it here for a while, but you are in europe I think, and it might be different for you, are they adding E85 to your gas right at the pump yet? Every station here is. It says up to 10% its corn oil I think or corn gas.

There is some debate but if you put a few drops of engine oil in each cylinder it can help keep the rings from scraping up your cylinders. But if its less than 6 months I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Quite true. I don't really know at what point gas will start to go bad. I have had vehicles that have sat where the gas did go bad (as well as lawnmowers, etc).

I dont suggest jumping into replacing the fuel right off. I would only do so if the car wont start up or cannot maintain idling. If it will, then run it out instead of draining it as Rosso mentions. Its just something to consider after extended periods of not running and you have any issues with it starting.
