Hi, I have a 1987 740 Hearse and have a problem with the gearbox. The rear seal area is worn due to a bolt shearing on the prop shaft so I need to replace it. The engine is 2316cc and the box is automatic. Do I have to limit my search to the same engine or was the box used on other engines/models. Any info would be apprciated.

hearse ... nice. it depends what automatic box you have, could be several.

aw70, aw71 or a ZF box, each seal would be different.

they used different boxes throughout the range, i myself have a 2litre 740 with an aw71 auto box. the engine size shouldn't matter.

Matt, how can I tell the model of gearbox - is there a label of some sort on the car somewhere?

yes. under the car (of course with it on a ramp or several jacks and stands) looking at the gearbox, from the left side of the car as it faces forward, there will be a plate on the side of it somewhere with model number and serial number etc.. it may be covered in general road rubbish so could need cleaning off with de-greaser. take care not to rub too hard as the numbers might come off.
