What's the # of turns out from seated for the black knob(idle) on the '88 740GLE~ LH-Jetronic2.4 throttle body
The black knob is on the bottom of the throttle body & has an allen wrench type hole in the top.
The Haynes manual suggests using it to fine tune the idle but list no initial setting.
I have it set to where it's always been after i cleaned the throttle body but i'd like to know if there's an initial factory setting OR steps to properly set the knob to provide optimum performance from the throttle body.
It's just a threaded nylon knob that screws into a addition to the throttle body. the car runs w/ the knob screwed in all the way as well as out all the way.
I do know that a turbo model volvo i have doesn't have this piece on the throttle body.
If someone out there has one with the knob on it; please count the # of complete turns from fully seated & let me know.
The further out it is set, the more i hear a "shwooshing" sound from the throttle body.
Please, No answers that begin with "I think" or "Maybe".

Yes its the air idle mixture valve, wind it in to make it richer and out for leaner i think. 50% chance on that being right.

My 740's been puffing out a bit of black smoke lately, could that be a result of this little knob being out or in too far? ..it just suddenly started and i have no idea how. I ain't the most mechanically minded person but i love my Volvo dearly.

well if you run it and let it warm up, then wind it in, either the revs should rise or fall, it should be idling at around 750 rpm, or just a few mm under the 1000rpm mark on the tach. you can do it that way.

if its still pushing out black smoke then its running far too rich and seeing as you have lh 2.4 (are you sure on this) then it could be a few things. is it running smoothly when its putting oput black smoke or is it quite lumpy? it could be fouled injectors or spark plugs.

ahh fair enough. i just realised having looked on my lot, with lh 2.4 you shouldnt have a black knob, its all done by the air idle control valve. can you post a pic of the knob you mention?

Its idoling rough and putting out black smoke. I paid for a full service 2 weeks ago then got a major rear main oil leak fixed last week, i dont know if my mechanic may have touched something or knocked something to start this problem....

well if it happened immediately after the work you had done, take it back to the garage and say, they should sort it.
