Hi all,

Many thanks for anyone who can answer this question:

There's a squeal coming from the rear of my '93 850 (175K), near one of the rotors. However, the squeal persists even when the car is *stopped* and idling. Furthermore, if I turn the car off and then turn on *only* the electrical, the squealing returns for about 15 seconds. I know the rear rotors and e-brake need to be changed, but the above symptoms suggest another problem. Oh, it's 90 degrees out and I did get the beast up to 105mph just to see...

Thanks in advance!

Any chance its coming from in the trunk? It could possibly be your fuel filter but I don't know what else is back there that could make such a noise being a 93 owner myself. This is tricky if its coming from the rear end, theres not much back there to make noise if its not the brakes.

Thanks for the description, at least we can zero that down to just the electrical stuff.

What about the fuel pump?

Was going to suggest the fuel pump as well, as it should be located in the rear (passenger side I believe). If it goes away after a few seconds when you turn the electricals on only, then it would make sense. When you first turn the electricals on the fuel pump will turn on to provide the fuel pressure in the lines before y ou start the car. Once the pressure is obtained and no fuel is yet being used it should cut off. If it lasts for quite awhile then its possible your fuel pump is going bad and isnt pumping as quickly as it should or unable to build up pressure as quickly as it should.

If that is the case then it would probably be one of:

- bearing going out in the pump
- impeller in the pump is worn out or loose
- trash in the tank is stuck in the pump

Just my guess on the problem, but there isnt much more back there to make noise that is electric. I dont know for certain about the suspension though. You can probably determine if it is the pump by having someone under the car by the fuel tank when you put the car into the On position, as they may be able to better pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

For those who would know, does the TRACs system have anything to do with controlling/correcting the suspension? Some carscan/will do this but I am not sure about Volvo (my previous Subaru did, and would even let me raise/lower the car about 4 inche as an OEM option).

Good luck. Let us know what it was if you figure it out.
