[SIZE=7]Any help or input would be great. I drive a 2002 C70 manual coupe 2.3L and a week ago, I experienced surges and rough power delivery when accelerating, usually between 1200 to 2500 rpm. The feeling of jerking as the car accelerated. Ok, fair enough, I thought the car needed a tune up anyway (12,000 miles since last from previous owner). Today, when I turned the car on, the "check engine" light came on! I remembered reading from a link to a site that what I had experienced might have something to do with the ETM. I will be having my car checked by a local mechanic and if ETM was the problem, I plan on getting the ETM replaced by my mechanic and get a refund from the dealer. The reason is that Volvo dealer is too far and I really don't have the time. My question is that would Volvo dealers honor the work or diagnose done by a local mechanic? Also, has anyone experienced the problem with the ETM??

Sounds like one of your coils crapped out on you. Depending on which one goes will determine at what rpm your car will run terribly. They are relatively inexpensive under 50 dollars each, but for 55 you could order the R coils from IPD. If it is the etm then you need to address it quickly before your extended warranty runs out. Good luck

Thanks for the input. My mechanic was too busy today, I will find out tomorrow what is needed.

Yo you are right, it's the ignition coils, actually 3 of them had to be replaced!! I got charged a total of $390 ($150 just to read the trouble codes + $80 each coil). My god, how did 3 go bad like that? It has only 44xxx miles! I think I want to buy a scanner, any suggestion? Problem with these mechanics are that they never liked customers buying their own supplies cutting on their profits! I hate them.

try pepboys. accutron. a buck 40 for the full on. you might be able to get it cheaper on amazon, though. also, check out ipdusa.com for mod parts and fcpgroton.com for stock parts. like mkc70 posted, upgrade to the R pieces. they'll be cheaper than the mech doing it.

Replace the final two when you get a chance, they will go bad shortly. Coils are a common problem. Indication that they are going bad is a drop on the mpg computer. Happened a total of three times for me so I decided to replace the last 3 the third time. Didn't want to get stuck far from home. My mechanic allows me to buy my own parts if I can get them for less. Which is probably about half the time. Any old scanner will do, just look for a good deal. Saw one in the ipd catalog for about 100 but didn't take a close look. Glad you got it sorted out.
