The car has 162,000 and from time to time blue smoke will come from exhuast
when cranked or sometimes sitting at red light.
I know about signs of turbo going out, but it's been doing this for about a year and I would think if the turbo is going out it would start smoking all the time?

Appreciate any help.

When your sitting your engine is moving at the lowest speed necessary to idle, and your turbo isn't moving all that fast allowing whatever oil your blowing out to collect, when you accelerate your more than likely blowing the oil that has collected out. A leaking turbo is bad and can lead to engine fires if not properly diagnosed

A turbo rebuild should be less than $300.00 with new bearings and seals there are a lot of online turbo dealers that provide the service, and your turbo comes back to you almost as good as new. If your mechanically inclined, remove the turbo from the car and check the vanes on the compressor side for oil residue, there may even be some in the charge pipes.

Otherwise it could just be oil leaking past the piston rings on the old girl. 162,000 is a lot of miles. If your compression is good across the cylinders (you can do this yourself or have a mechanic check for you). Then most likely it is seals in the turbo going out. Have you ever had the turbo serviced before?

Thanks for the help and reply, no never had the turbo serviced, and I'm sure as you mentioned it's the Turbo going out.

My 1992 940 turbo is still kicking strong at 324,000 miles, never cared to much for the s70 and front wheel drive, much harder to work on than the 940.

Thanks
