I've read that S60s can have a grinding noise with hard turns and it's tire rubbing but I don't think that's my case. I have a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5 AWD with 16" tires with 38,500 miles on it, it's CPO (onlu 1000 miles in since purchase which aggravates me a little but no biggie), and the vehicle makes a grinding, strange, creaking noise but only when I turn the wheel hard left. Hard right does not replicate the same noise, it's perfectly fine. I did notice that my power steering fluid was low so maybe the dealer didn't top off when I purchased, I added some, thinking the noise would go away but it did not (although I can turn the wheel a lot easier than before).

Thoughts? I'm bringing it to the dealer but I'd thought I'd give the forum a crack / give me an idea what I'm looking and and if it's covered under my CPO warranty.

Turns out my power steering hose was loose, one of the wheel stops needed to be adjusted as well. Alls well that ends well.

Except the noise came back after a few days of driving. Back to the shop it goes! Only hard lefts and the steering is much harder than it was a few days ago.

I had a similar problem just after I got my 2002 S60 two years ago. Turns out that the clamps that attached the power steering hoses - both - had loosened, and my fluid had gotten low. I'd start by checking its level. Apparently air gets into the system, causing a noise. I've had both hose clamps replaced - no problem since.

Warning: be careful about what you put into the reservoir. Apparently Volvos like something besides regular power steering fluid. Or, just to be safe, have the system flushed and filled at your local mechanic or dealer. I believe that a flush/fill of the PS fluid is standard for the 60,000 mile maintenance, but I guess you're far from that.

Had the same symptoms with my 2001. Turned out to be a leak in the power steering system.
