Hi all,

I'm writing with a few questions about my '93 5-Speed 850GLT, just bought this weekend. The previous owner was extremely honest and forthright, and cared for it well. (It's at about 175K and all major parts (e.g. engine, brakes, etc.) are in great shape.)

Here's a sort of miscellany, but of course I welcome any additional advice. I'm by no means a mechanic--played with an old BMW 2002 when I was a teenager--so please excuse the basic questions.
--Any way to know if/when the timing belt needs to be changed?
--Are there some parts cheap enough that should be replaced just as preventative care

Also,
--Anyone know the specifics on the model numbers (or where to find) a
-Thule Roof Rack
-Fog Lamps (if possible)

Thanks!

Timing-belt? Auxiliary belt?
Any of them start squeaking, replace them immediately.
If not, they should be changed at 70,000kms, if not mistaken, though i normally dont wait that long.

The Stage 0 maintenance parts, like the distributor cap, the plugs, the plug wires, the cam-position sensor (not that cheap), the flywheel sensor (also not that cheap) etc.

Check to see if anything is leaking. And if there are, what colour are the fluids. If green, its coolant (unless you're using the red-colour or blue-coloured one). if red, then look at which part is it leaking from, either gearbox or power-steering pump. If brown/black, then engine oil. Also look again, at where its coming from.

As for the part numbers, just call the parts clerk, they are usually good. The survival of the company usually rests on how good the clerks are.

As for THule's you'll need to contact Thule for details.

I think they are fairly expensive anywhere you buy them but I consider they are way, way overpriced for what you get.

A lot of people have them as a fashion statement however, I might consider buying one if the price came down about 70%.

I agree!
And the local lousy-looking make IS about 50% cheaper.
:)

But maybe not totally lost.
A good paint may do the trick good.
