Hello Volvo Foum-

Driving on the interstate my 1987 Volvo 240 DL wagon just shut down while going 70...had to coast to a stop but before I did I juggled my fuses and for a brief second got power again. Once stopped it turned over great, all interior electrical working fine, plenty of gas.....just wouldn't start again.

Earlier in the day it did the same thing on Mobile Bay bridge (AL) and an emergency vehicle pushed me across the bridge to Daphne, AL and once in a parking lot I tried to crank it up and it started right away.

2nd time it happened it would not start again and got towed into Destin, FL. I opened the hood and pressed down on all plug, cap, coil, battery connections, etc. and still it turned over fine, plenty of power...just wouldnt start.

So it seems electrical.

1. What should I speak to the mechanic in Ft. Walton, FL on Monday about?

2. How much should I expect to have to pay?

Any suggestions most welcome and appreciated.

Thank you,

Rob

Make sure you have 12V on the positive side of the coil. Its the one with the blue wire - if you have to, hot wire it - run 12V from the battery to the "+" side of the coil only if you have to.

The pre - 89 cars are fairly simple (compared to today's cars).

Replace the fuel pump relay.

Check idle speed-make sure throttle is fully closed-adjust stop, linkage & air bleed screw as needed. replace linkage if worn ball joints. Make absolutely certain that there are NO & I mean NO, air leaks between the MAF sensor and the butterfly. Remove concertina hose to check it for cracks and wear. Check all vacuum hoses for cracks and good fit. replace as req'd. Clean PCV system and oil trap-dirty and fiddly job.

check connections on Crank angle sensor, MAF, clean main fuse in heavy wire from +ve battery near Left suspension tower, check battery terminals and connections. If fuel prob. check fuel pump relays and fuel pumps-always pays to check fuel pressure (regulator).
