Sorry for the dumb question, I'm no car pro, but would like to boost up some more power. Is it possible (whether or not it's dumb) to easily swap out a low for a high pressure turbo? If so, how costly would you expect it to be, and how labor intensive, etc...? Thanks!

This just from what i see. I cant make more comments on that, as i havent interviewed the owner yet. This is from a modded V40 that was a 2.0L LPT.

Even after changing the turbo to 18T (or was it 18G?), performance was disappointing. Only after a proper tuneing up of the ECU, added some chip in, was the V40 able to perform to its mark.

In terms of cost, i think you may have to check with the prices there.

yes with the newer cars it isnt as easy as just putting a boost controller in-line of the wastegate to control the pressure.

the newer cars have sensors everywhere! if you start to mod something you will have to mod a sensor somewhere else etc...

there should be any difference between the physical engine of a LPT and HPT as it would just be limited to 4psi and 8psi respectively by the ecu...

i dont proclaim to know much about the ecu tuning these days, would love to get into it, got a few books and i am starting to learn, give me an old skool engine and i am happy :)

On that note, I've read before from a reliable source who I can't remember that the HPT is fun on the highway but you won't feel it as much as the LPT on the street. It's hard to tell what you're looking for in the ways of increased performance: more sporty feeling, better 0-60, or what? You may want to consider some other options before thinking of upgrading your turbo, or switching it out. There are a lot of easier, comparably priced upgrades and changes you can make to the car.

Seriously, just browse through IPDUSA or eurosportstuning and you'll get all sorts of ideas.

yes you will.

indeed the reason behind the hpt feeling on the highway is because its a bigger compressor wheel (i think) AND it runs higher boost which takes longer to reach ... around 3500rpm (highway sort of speed)

the lpt (like my 940) spools up and deficates on everyone at about 2000rpm and give 7.5 psi of boost. this is why you feel it more on street cos it spools up quicker and lower down the range due to probably once again a smaller compressor wheel.

that having said, mine wastes out at 3500rpm, so i WILL be getting a custom manifold and exhaust and either a second slightly bigger turbo for a twin setup (oh baby watch me fly) OR i garret T28 with a T25 compressor and of course a ridiculously large intercooler, throttle bosy and total uber inlet manifold.

dude, i am waiting to see that setup. big time. oh wait, as the answer, yes. the lpt will be felt more on the street, especially off the line, because of the lesser turbo lag. on the hpt,the lag is more, but once in the sweet zone, the lpt won't even come close to touching it. so to cap off the question that hastings posted, you will need a whole host of items to switch from lpt to hpt. just check out ipdusa.com for an ecu upgrade, it's not the same thing, but it will cost you less than tearing down everything and replacing with the hpt. or just sell and buy an hpt. good luck and keep us posted.
