Today the engine started making a loud rattle in the front of the engine, sounds like lifter rattle but the engine runs fine, oil pressure is fine, looking though the oil fill cap there is a lot of oil splashing around like it should, and the noise doesn't get any louder so I don't think it's cam follower related. Turning the A/C off doesn't make any difference. Any ideas?

Further inspection reveals a funny metallic smell, and when bringing up the rpm, the noise subsides a little bit. Is sounds a lot like a tin dust shield rubbing on a flywheel, but I don't see anything like that under the car. It seems louder when it is pointing downhill. I'm thinking there is some piece of metal somewhere where it's not supposed to be, and it's getting chewed up. No codes are set. Engine runs fine, has fine power, is smooth, nothing to indicate anything wrong other than the noise. Tranny fluid is full, and clean, with no funny smell or stuff on the stick. Oil is clean, just changed it 500 miles ago. But man, it sounds terrible. I'm still hunting, any help would be appreciated.

It turned out to be the starter. The gear was stuck in the flywheel so it was spinning with the engine.

damn never heard of that happening. at least everthing is okay and now we know what it will sound like if one of us ever has that happen.
