Hi ,this is my first question to the forum
I have an '99 v70 xc awd with 135000 miles.
after an 160 mile daily trip I was traveling cruise control 60 mph when a very slight vibration started not continuous but rhythmical and it got stronger, when I pulled off the expressway and into a gas station this noise came from the front as if you stick a metal wire into the blades of a fan, when I came into a stop the noise stopped and the engine sound fine ,fan fine, and nothing wrong.I started again and once on the expressway I could hear this ticking noise, very subtle but there.
I put the car on neutral to see if was a ujoint and noise still there .
next day went for a ride to check noise with friend and, not there ,noise or vibration.car is as nothing never happened, went under and check ujoint and front end and nothing loose, now Im worried it might get bad and let me stranded;it was bad enough for just disappear like that.
Any idea as what to check for or might be? brakes are good,
cruise control?,was engaged at the time when that happened.could that be that is faulty?
cv joints makes no noise left or right.
I posted the question in just answer and an expert thinks it might be the torque converter starting to fault;but the fan noise was more external,it didn't sound like an internal part, that is why I went and check the cooling fan first and the brakes.
If anybody have an idea I will be thankfull cause I like my car and dont want to get rid of him,and if is the tranny I will have to;I cant afford to fix it.
Thanks

We had the front CV joint , the one coming from the transaxle in the front next to the manifold going to the rear wheels, go bad on us.
It sounded just like you described.
The sound got worse over time.
The position of this CV joint next to the hot manifold tends to bake the grease in it over time.
I have a 2000 v70 xc.

Just a suggestion, but the description of metal in a fan blade only when moving sounded very familiar to me.

It was as blue whale said ,the center cv joint that send the power to the rear wheels
I ordered online to eeuroparts $230,the dealer said they sell it together with the cardan bar and wanted 1100 for it,I just got the car yesterday, the part was backorder and took 15 days to arrive.
Now the car after being for almost three weeks at the shop is misfiring and idling in only four cylinders, the mechanic said is possible a coil is bad and only a coincidence that happened now (I think they were using it and misusing it while waiting for the part)
My advice, keep the car home while waiting for the part.
