My emissions won't pass due to a high NOx reading. It is almost 2x over the limit. Any suggestions as to what I should look at first?

How does the car run? High NOX is either super hot combustion temps (lean running, bad timing), exhaust before the cat leaks, a bad cat, maybe O2 sensor.

I would check the ECU for trouble codes - see if it says lean mixture.
